Convertible Buying Guide

Driving a convertible on a sunny day is a unique thrill. Few experiences in the automotive world can match it. Rolling back the roof on a roadster, breathing in the scent of freshly mown grass, and listening to the engine hum as you cruise down an open road is pure driving enjoyment.

In the past, convertibles were often seen as seasonal toys, suited only for fair weather. Today, however, modern convertibles offer far fewer compromises than their predecessors. Soft tops now provide improved insulation from wind and noise, and most feature durable glass rear windows instead of the old plastic versions that scratched easily. Added comforts like heated seats and steering wheels can extend your top-down driving even into cooler months. Hardtop convertibles go a step further, providing even better protection from the elements and road noise.

Most modern convertibles are two-door models, though some exceptions exist, including the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and Gladiator.

Driving a convertible still comes with trade-offs. They often have stiffer rides, reduced cargo and passenger space, and can sit lower to the ground, making entry and exit less convenient. Rear visibility can be limited when the roof is raised, and fabric tops are more susceptible to break-ins compared with hardtops.
